Abstract

Stemming from the Olympic idea and from the international social problems in current times, I suggest the need of an Olympic Education, mainly through the International Olympic Academy and through other manifestations in the world (Singapore, South Africa, Peru and Australia). Supported by Pierre de Coubertin's ideals, Olympic Education has as its objectives: (1) to promote the development of those physical and moral qualities that are the basis of sports; (2) to educate youth through the sports for a better understanding and friendship, creating an atmosphere of peace in the world; (3) to propagate the Olympic principles for the international friendship; (4) to show the athletes and world citizens the Olympic Games and their meanings. The Olympic Education is an ethical education and was developed through important publications such as: Come Together: The Olympics and You (1986, 1987); Fair Play for Kids: A Handbook of Activities for Teaching Fair Play (1990, 1995); Keep the Spirit: The Olympic Games (1995); Celebrate the Spirit: The Olympic Games (1995); Be a Champion in Life (2000), published by the Foundation for Olympic and Sport Education (FOSE).
